For many, deer symbolize a connection to the supernatural and the otherworld. White deer in particular appear as omens of adventure and salvation, sin and death. In the American Midwest, deer are viewed as pests, as road hazards, and as prey. I’m struck by the conditions of these animals' nocturnal lives. They exist in the liminal space of the woods and fields– natural breaks in the fabricated habitat we build over theirs. Entire generations are born, live, and die in our backyards, almost all under cover of darkness.  In this work, I use a camera flash and negative imaging to illuminate the dark otherworld in which they spend their lives, acting as an inversion of the landscape with which we are accustomed.
